MEDIA RELEASE

Restricted Flight Operations into Aboriginal Communities

19th March, 2020

Gove Airport, NT – Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) has restricted its flight operations into remote aboriginal communities and homelands in Arnhem Land to essential travel only. The decision has been made following recommendations from the Northern Territory Government and the Northern Land Council (NLC) to cancel non-essential travel into homelands as a preventative measure against the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Essential travel during this time is defined as travel that is necessary to keep a community operating.

MAF has been advised that doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers and council workers will not be affected by this restriction. Deliveries by barge, road or air are generally considered essential services for now. If unsure, passengers are urged to call the Remote Travel Hotline on 1800 518 189 to clarify.

NLC has suspended all current non-essential permits and will not be granting any new non-essential travel permits until further notice. It is the responsibility of passengers to acquire all necessary permissions prior to entering Aboriginal homelands or communities.

All MAF aircraft are cleaned and disinfected as required after flights in accordance with MAF’s operational standard. Other procedures to mitigate the possible transmission of the virus by our flight operations is being established.

MAF is in full compliance with the Government and local authorities, while continuing to provide restricted service during this difficult time.
